As a Rumnie(gypsy)I can feel you partners pains.I am gay and it was a gut wrenching decision for me to come out. It took years for my mom and dad to come to grips with who I am. But eventually they did and now we are better for it. In a Rumnie family, FAMILY is everything. It is drilled into you as a child and even as a young adult and when I say family ,I mean blood family. People who marry into the family are not really family for many, many years and depending on how well they assimilate into the family, determines how fast they are accepted.(think the sopranos). Being Rumnie also means you are tied to the family in one way or another with your livelihood. Since most Rumnies don’t have regular jobs and educations it makes their choices limited. My advice is to be there for your friend but don’t push the OUT button. When he is ready, he will come out or do like most rumnie men, have two lives. I myself am totally OUT and it came at a great price. I lost a lot of family in the process. I am excluded from many events and shunned on a regular basis. But I took a turn when I was just a kid that made it possible for me, I got an education and went to college. First in my family. It gave me more opportunities and choices. I bet your friend never even finished the 9th grade. So his choices in the real world are limited. Best of luck to the two of you, but be cautious. Suicides in the family on the subject are very high. And in typical rumnie fashion even our deaths are misleading. Suicides for rumnie’s involve horrible car accidents, not poisons or guns or normal suicide stuff.

Ya'll want to hear a nice story? Well here goes.I'm gorgia, but, my husband is rumny. We've been together for almost 23 years.We're both men by the way. We kinda stayed out of the extended families,{aunts,cousins,etc.}way most of our lives.But we did travel with his parents off and on and his brother and his family. This past december his mom died after an extended illness.She lived with us for the last five years and didn't have a problem with us....she did at first.When we took her to florida to be buried everything seemed fine.We did all the arrangements and had a two day viewing. Since me and Tay have been together for so long I naturally thought everyone knew about us.WRONG! I was pretty much ignored by many folky.A few were friendly and thanked me for taking such good care of their Aunt.But many didn't even know who I was. On the last day we were all sitting at the chapel,I was up front sitting with Tay.I didn't think nothing of it.We were there for each other. But not everybody saw it that way.Some of the folky voiced their dissatisfaction with me sitting with tay and up front with the family. Thank god for the Aunts.....they kinda put a few people in their places.Acceptance can happen. There are a lot of gay rumny out their and like most of you know, they are married and live double lives. Luckily there are out and proud gay rumny like us{yeah I'm kinda more rumny than gorgia now}and my hope is that our gay nephews and nieces can read this and know that there is still a chance at a normal loving life being a gay traveller.

Hello fella's. Being a gypsy and being gay is gotta be one of the hardest things in life to cope with. I was brought up with all me aunts and uncles around me. I never knew what gay ment cause if someone come on the telly that was gay it was turned over. I thought this feeling would go away like the flu or something. I got married had 4 kids. Split up and moved back home when i was 24. I used to get drunk most nights to get away from this feeling. I told me mum and dad i was gay when i was 28 they didn't speak to me for 6 months. I aint seen my kids for 5 years and all i do is think of em. At 30 i met a fella who is a traveller and we have been together for nearly 5 years now. I'm happy and wished i'd done this when i was 18.i'm 34 now. Listen fella's your born gay and you aint gonna change. To the fella who left a message on the 29th december. Don't get married mate, you think its the right thing to do but it aint. I done the same thing but as i got older i got more depressed and down. I'v told me mum and dad when i was 28 and things is better for me. But the past always catches up with you and if you get married and have kids it won't change how you feel inside. I not a gypsy but i have a gypsy boyfriend who isnt out to anyone yet but i am. Im 16 and he's 18 and cos he hasnt told anyone we cant do things a normal couple can cos we always think someone is watching him. I am really interested in the gypsy way of life & its such a shame his family wouldnt accept him if he told them he was gay cos id love to spend time in a travelling community. Its really hard for him, when he's not with me he gets drunk and gets into fights alot and when he is with me he tends to cry alot and tell me how he wants to spend his life with me but he's scared of his dad beating him. Hi guys, I'm not a gypsy...but have been watching 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' on Channel 4 and was wondering after tonights episode that centred around young gypsy lads searching for wives, if they were going to mention anything about homosexuality, but I guess its just too much of a taboo subject and would upset many of your comunity! I'm 23 and gay and feel so much for your situations, I was very lucky to have the novelty of coming out to my family with only a few weeks of my family coming to terms with my news. I used to work in a gay club where I live and some of my regulars were gypsies and have become good friends with them (all female)..some of the lads would join them there on nights out (was a club where many straight people would go due to it being open until 6am and playing amazing music)...I never received any grief from the guys or girls, and I'm no queen but they knew I was gay and I talked openly to them about it. I'm starting to think maybe the guys were only tolerating me due to the girls fondness of me and the guys interest in the girls...but on the other hand maybe things are starting to change for you! I have never met a gay gypsy (to my knowledge) but I hope I do in the future, the lads on the show are well hot! ;) x

I think it I'd really interesting subject,also appreciate, traveller culture is steeped in tradition, I am a gay man who came out at 16 now 28 and faced some of the issues you talk about from a non travelling family.
Most family reactions are based on fear, lack of knowledge, and judgements of what it means to be gay.
I would also say from one comment, that if people want this to change they have the power to achieve acceptance although it is a long road.
I will always remember someone saying to me: people that mind don't matter, people who matter don't mind.

As a Rumnie(gypsy)I can feel you partners pains.I am gay and it was a gut wrenching decision for me to come out. It took years for my mom and dad to come to grips with who I am. But eventually they did and now we are better for it.
In a Rumnie family, FAMILY is everything. It is drilled into you as a child and even as a young adult and when I say family ,I mean blood family. People who marry into the family are not really family for many, many years and depending on how well they assimilate into the family, determines how fast they are accepted.(think the sopranos).
Being Rumnie also means you are tied to the family in one way or another with your livelihood. Since most Rumnies don’t have regular jobs and educations it makes their choices limited.
My advice is to be there for your friend but don’t push the OUT button. When he is ready, he will come out or do like most rumnie men, have two lives.
I myself am totally OUT and it came at a great price. I lost a lot of family in the process. I am excluded from many events and shunned on a regular basis. But I took a turn when I was just a kid that made it possible for me, I got an education and went to college. First in my family. It gave me more opportunities and choices. I bet your friend never even finished the 9th grade. So his choices in the real world are limited.
Best of luck to the two of you, but be cautious. Suicides in the family on the subject are very high. And in typical rumnie fashion even our deaths are misleading. Suicides for rumnie’s involve horrible car accidents, not poisons or guns or normal suicide stuff.

Ya'll want to hear a nice story? Well here goes.I'm gorgia, but, my husband is rumny.
We've been together for almost 23 years.We're both men by the way.
We kinda stayed out of the extended families,{aunts,cousins,etc.}way most of our lives.But we did travel with his parents off and on and his brother and his family.
This past december his mom died after an extended illness.She lived with us for the last five years and didn't have a problem with us....she did at first.When we took her to florida to be buried everything seemed fine.We did all the arrangements and had a two day viewing.
Since me and Tay have been together for so long I naturally thought everyone knew about us.WRONG!
I was pretty much ignored by many folky.A few were friendly and thanked me for taking such good care of their Aunt.But many didn't even know who I was.
On the last day we were all sitting at the chapel,I was up front sitting with Tay.I didn't think nothing of it.We were there for each other.
But not everybody saw it that way.Some of the folky voiced their dissatisfaction with me sitting with tay and up front with the family.
Thank god for the Aunts.....they kinda put a few people in their places.Acceptance can happen.
There are a lot of gay rumny out their and like most of you know, they are married and live double lives.
Luckily there are out and proud gay rumny like us{yeah I'm kinda more rumny than gorgia now}and my hope is that our gay nephews and nieces can read this and know that there is still a chance at a normal loving life being a gay traveller.

Being a gypsy and being gay is gotta be one of the hardest things in life to cope with. I was brought up with all me aunts and uncles around me. I never knew what gay ment cause if someone come on the telly that was gay it was turned over. I thought this feeling would go away like the flu or something. I got married had 4 kids. Split up and moved back home when i was 24. I used to get drunk most nights to get away from this feeling. I told me mum and dad i was gay when i was 28 they didn't speak to me for 6 months. I aint seen my kids for 5 years and all i do is think of em. At 30 i met a fella who is a traveller and we have been together for nearly 5 years now. I'm happy and wished i'd done this when i was 18.i'm 34 now. Listen fella's your born gay and you aint gonna change. Hi guys, I'm not a gypsy...but have been watching 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' on Channel 4 and was wondering after tonights episode that centred around young gypsy lads searching for wives, if they were going to mention anything about homosexuality, but I guess its just too much of a taboo subject and would upset many of your comunity! I'm 23 and gay and feel so much for your situations, I was very lucky to have the novelty of coming out to my family with only a few weeks of my family coming to terms with my news. I used to work in a gay club where I live and some of my regulars were gypsies and have become good friends with them (all female)..some of the lads would join them there on nights out (was a club where many straight people would go due to it being open until 6am and playing amazing music)...I never received any grief from the guys or girls, and I'm no queen but they knew I was gay and I talked openly to them about it. I'm starting to think maybe the guys were only tolerating me due to the girls fondness of me and the guys interest in the girls...but on the other hand maybe things are starting to change for you! I have never met a gay gypsy (to my knowledge) but I hope I do in the future, the lads on the show are well hot! ;) x

I think it I'd really interesting subject,also appreciate, traveller culture is steeped in tradition, I am a gay man who came out at 16 now 28 and faced some of the issues you talk about from a non travelling family.
Most family reactions are based on fear, lack of knowledge, and judgements of what it means to be gay.
I would also say from one comment, that if people want this to change they have the power to achieve acceptance although it is a long road.
I will always remember someone saying to me: people that mind don't matter, people who matter don't mind.

I'm a Romany living in Australia - came from Leeds in 1970.
My mam n dad knows I'm gay but I don tells others unless they ask. It's not been easy. Been with a gorgi for 15 years - he respects romany ways n my mam and dad accept him. Couldn tell other family tho. Many of em have asked me in private if i'm with a mush - were'nt happy at first but they're ok now tho they wont tell others in the family.
